Adult Swimming Workshops

Swimming is a skill that ANYONE can learn at almost any age with the correct instruction and yet learning to swim can be frustrating for many adults unless they are taught to ignore their human instincts to struggle against the water in survival mode. Many adults feel embarrassed that they are unable to swim and have mental barriers that hinder the learning process. That’s why we believe the mind coaching element of this course is equally as important as the swim coaching. We want to help you achieve many of your goals in life, not just swimming! The Total Immersion methods are unique and will not involve adult arm bands or other floating aids. We will teach you to use your own natural buoyancy and to co-operate with water, not fight it. Maximum 12 swimmers per course so register asap before places are filled!

At the end of the workshop you can expect to be feeling comfortable and relaxed floating in water and should be able to take at least a few swimming strokes . Special attention will also be placed on aquatic breathing, so you will learn to breathe correctly and in a relaxed way in the water. This fundamental skill will give you the confidence to continue to develop your swimming post workshop.

Post course you will have online access to all the video clips shown on the course and Alice will provide follow up notes for you to practice your new mind management skills both in and out of the pool.

If you follow the guidelines and practices we have shown you in your own time after the workshop, you will soon be ready to develop your chosen swimming stroke (we recommend freestyle or breastroke for beginners). Follow up lessons are available with Tri n Swim WELL . Follow up Mind Management sessions are available with Alice from her Maldon Clinic if you chose to develop these skills.
We recognise that adults with a fear of water will find it difficult to go to a pool to practice their new skills on their own. That’s why we are able to offer a free place for observational purposes only to anyone who wants to bring a swim buddy/partner that will be committed to helping them on their swimming journey in the future..
All workshops must be booked online via the workshops page at http://www.totalimmersion.co.uk . The full schedule for the workshop is also available on their website.

FAQ s

  1. FAQ s 1. Will I be out of my depth? - At first we will be in water that is 1m deep, so everyone will be able to stand up, with the water at waist level approximately depending on height. As we progress we will move into deeper water . The deep end is 2.0m . 2. Will I need goggles? Yes, you will be encouraged to put your face in the water throughout all the pool sessions. It is impossible to swim weightlessly with your head out of the water. Although we will have some spare goggles with us, we recommend you bring a pair with you. A swim hat will be provided by us. 3. What happens if I can’t keep up with the rest of the group? There will be a maximum of 6 swimmers per 1 instructor in the pool. We will encourage people to work in pairs and we will work within the capabilities of the group. Alice will always be on poolside to help individuals if they need to focus on their confidence during the pool session. What is the water temperature? The water is 28 degrees , but it can still get quite chilly if we are not moving around continually. We suggest that if you do sometimes suffer with the cold, you can wear a swimming rash vest which will keep you slightly warmer. Gill and Dawn will have a couple of these spare, but sizes will vary. We also suggest you bring a robe and some flip flops with you as we may take a short break during the pool session.
